Every great room begins long before the doors open. It begins with a point of view.
Good taste rarely announces itself. It doesn't need to. It's reflected in the records someone chooses to play, the materials they choose to build with and the light they decide to leave on. The smallest decisions often say the most.
Some places become part of the city because of where they are. Others because of the people who build them.
Opening August 5th in DUMBO, Don't Matter is the result of people with exceptional taste deciding to build the room they wanted to exist.
Not because New York was missing another bar. Far from it. The city has long been home to some of the world's most celebrated places to gather. But every so often, a new space arrives with a perspective that feels entirely its own.
That philosophy reveals itself before the doors have even opened. In a city constantly asking what's next, Don't Matter asks a quieter question.
What actually matters?
A room with soul.
A record worth hearing from beginning to end.
A drink made with care.
The people across the table.
Everything else can wait.
From the images alone, it's clear that this question informed more than the menu. It shaped the room itself. Warm walnut meets exposed concrete, while stone, tile and soft amber lighting create a palette that feels rich without excess. Every material appears carefully considered, each one contributing to a space that favours restraint over spectacle.
The vinyl collection isn't treated as decoration. It's woven into the architecture itself, reinforcing that music isn't simply part of the experience. It sits at the centre of it.
And then there's the patio.
In a city where outdoor spaces often feel borrowed from the sidewalk, this one appears to offer something altogether different. Timber, cozy cushions and lush greenery soften the city, creating a setting that feels remarkably removed from everything happening just beyond the bridge.
The bathroom deserves its own paragraph.
Wrapped in deep ruby tile and warm golden light, it feels like another expression of the room's creative direction rather than an afterthought. If the early images are any indication, it won't be long before it becomes one of the city's most photographed spaces.
Every detail carries the same level of intention. The cocktail program, crafted by Beverage Advisor Wilmer Reyes, is another expression of the bar's point of view, while the food menu celebrates Caribbean flavours familiar across the diaspora. Together, they reinforce that this isn't simply a beautiful room. It's one built with culture in mind.
Perhaps that's what makes Don't Matter so compelling before the first record was ever played.
It isn't trying to reinvent New York's nightlife.
It's simply the product of people who cared enough to create the room they wanted to exist.
And in doing so, they've created something that feels increasingly rare. A place where the music isn't competing with conversation, where design isn't competing with the menu, and where every element exists in service of the same idea.
Some places are worth talking about.
Others become part of the conversation.
